A two day ascent of this 3717m Volcano.
Location
The summit of this extinct volcano is shared between Chile and Argentina.
Transport:
From Junin de los Andes or San martin de Los Andes the bus via Hito Paso Mahuil Malal to Curarrehue & Pucon.Get off at Guarderia Tromen. You may need to book the return journey as the bus is often full coming from Pucon.
Camping:
Camping available at Guarderia Tromen (fee payable). There are 3 very basic refuges on the Volcano: Caja, RIM & RIM II. Limited camping areas on the mountain.
Route:
From Guarderia Tromen follow the vehicle track South West through the forest until it exits the trees and continues to a river. The route then follows up follows a lateral moraine (Espina de Pescado), this goes directly to Refuge RIM (6 hours). Overnight at one of the Refuges. Sunrise start following the rough tracks. The last section before the summit is very loose and steep with the possability of falling rock. The summit is glacial but no crevasses on the ascent side. Snow may require use of ice axe in early season. Refuge to summit (7 Hours). decsend same route.
